| Welcome |
Welcome to KD0DCX communications! This site aims to provide an array of communications information, particularly information relevant to the Denver Metro area. Breaking news stories from the Metro Area are updated in real time. You will find information on monitoring public safety agencies, amateur radio information, frequencies and more.
With its wide variety of terrain, weather and radio systems, Denver can be a fun and challenging environment for monitoring and amateur radio communications. The state of Colorado has implemented a Project 25 Digital Trunked Radio System, and many counties and municipalities have adopted and are using the P25 system. Several agencies in the Denver Metro area maintain their own EDACS systems and do not operate on the DTRS system. You will find information on all these systems on this site.

| Uniden Announces Firmware Updates - With ESK Support |
 |
Well, it's official. Uniden has announced that they will release firmware upgrades to their digital scanners that allows tracking and monitoring of analog EDACS ESK systems. Supposedly, the 396 and 996 will be the first to receive the updates, and Uniden states that they will not be charging customers for this update.
The 396 and 996 are scheduled to see firmware updates on September 30, 2008 with the rest of the scanners updating by early 2009. Judging by what we've seen in the past from Uniden, we won't see an upgrade anytime remotely close to September 30. If I had to guess, I'd say Thanksgiving at the earliest. Regardles, it's nice that Uniden is finally responding to their customers. See the announcement HERE. |

| Douglas County Tornadoes |
 |
A total of 4 tornadoes wreaked havoc across Douglas County this afternoon. A line of severe storms dropped several rope tornadoes on the plains, causing only minor damage to some outbuildings and homes. There were no injuries reported. Several local news agencies captured High Definition video of the twisters. NBC Affiliate 9News has a neat slideshow with lots of images.
I captured some radar images of the event using my copy of GRLevel3, which showed strong rotation and large hail in the affected areas. Click the image to the left to view the radar images. With 2 unprecedented tornadoes reported yesterday in Park County, this weekends weather made for an unusual late august weekend. |

| Democratic National Convention |
The DNC starts Sunday here in Denver, and those of us that monitor are going to have plenty to keep our ears happy for the next 5 days.
Security has been seriously beefed up at the Fed Center ... The FPS (Federal Protective Services - Department of Homeland Security) talkgroups have been unusually busy with all kinds of chatter in the last couple of days. See the list below for more information. The system should be programmed as Motorola APCO25 CAI. Control channels in the list below are labeled with a (c) and alternate control channels with an (a)

| Denver goes ESK |
Well, after much testing and waiting, Denver finally made the switch to ESK this morning at 07:30. Various complaints could be heard on different talkgroups about problems with the switch.
Overall, however, the transition appears to have taken place without causing any major disruptions in service.
As with Lakewood, the only way to monitor the Denver Public Safety system at this time is by purchasing a GRE PSR-500 or PSR-600 scanner. Uniden has been unusually quiet about any new firmware updates, and my personal opinion is that they will not release an update anytime in the near future. I would guess that you will see a new Uniden scanner before you see an upgrade that allows users to monitor ESK systems without using SCAT.
Denver cut it close with the DNC starting Sunday, but PSR owners are sure to have plenty to listen to with the chaos that is certain to ensue in the coming week. Stay tuned for more information on Democratic National Convention information and updates on the ESK situation.
**Update 00:42 8/24/08** Denver EMS appears to be using Mutual Aid Channel GREEN 1 tonight. Seems like they are having a problem with the ESK system.
**Update 2 01:31 8/24/08** I just learned from another forum that all local EMS traffic will be using GREEN 1 during the DNC. |

| My First Day of HF on the Ham Bands |
Last Saturday I went and passed my General exam so that I could begin operating on the HF bands. I traded my Icom 2200-H for a Kenwood TS-440S HF radio, which finally came via UPS today. I spent a good part of the week trying to figure out how to string a G5RV Jr Dipole in my tiny attic. Frustrated, I finally settled on a "Z" shape, strung throughout the attic. I was seriously starting to doubt whether or not this configuration was going to work for me.
Well, much to my surprise, I've managed to make several contacts tonight on the HF bands!!! WOOT!!! I am absolutely amazed that this radio, with the antenna configuration I chose, is getting out the way it is! On a measly 100 Watts! Here are the contacts I've made in the last 2 hours on 40 meters:
- KE7NC0 in Reno Nevada which is 1000 miles from home.
- K0DT in Colfax IA which is 750 miles from home.
- W9WPV in Pensacola FL, which is 1500 miles from home
- N5ITE in Black Rock AR, which is 900 miles from home.
I never expected this!!! I'm sitting here giggling like a schoolgirl. More later ... it's certain to be a long night!

| Lakewood Child Stuck in Car Window |
 |
A small child was
found unconscious, not breathing,
stuck in a car
window this afternoon. Employees at Aspen Tires, on the corner of
Jewell and Kipling, pulled the child from the car and performed CPR
until medics arrived.
The child was transported to Saint Anthony's
Central hospital, but was later transported to Children's hospital.
Investigators were on scene piecing together the events that led to the
child becoming stuck. Agents from the Lakewood Police Department
accompanied the family to the hospital and continued their
investigation both at the scene and at Childrens hospital. The

| Lakewood Bank Robbery |
Lakewood Police and the Jefferson County Sheriffs department are on the scene of a bank robbery at Belleview and Kipling in Lakewood. Witnesses tell authorities that shots were fired inside the bank and that at least one suspect escaped from the bank with a stolen bank employee vehicle. The vehicle was recovered north of Belleview.
Jefferson County Sheriffs deputies are attempting to track the suspect with K9's and Lakewood Police have setup an extensive perimeter to attempt apprehension of the suspect. A lot of details remain unknown, I will post more as I get more information. |
